Understanding the Different Types of Hair Extensions
If you’re new to hair extensions, you may have heard the words Clip In, Tape In, Wigs, or Sew In/Weaves thrown around without knowing what they mean and what the differences are between them. In this blog post, we’ll break down the different types of hair extensions and help clear up some confusion.
How Hair Extensions are Made
Before we get into the different types of hair extension installation methods, the first thing you need to know about hair extensions is that they come in real human hair extensions and synthetic hair extensions. What’s the difference you might ask? Well, human hair is exactly what it sounds like. These extensions are made from actual human hair and are collected from a donor. Remy hair is human hair collected from a single hair donor, cut as a ponytail with the cuticles in the same direction. You can read more about Remy hair and what it is here! Endless Hair Extensions are made from 100% Remy human hair.
Synthetic hair is not human hair and is made out of various synthetic materials. These fibers are very fine and are manufactured to imitate real human hair. Although synthetic hair extensions are often times cheaper than Remy human hair extensions, they don’t last nearly as long and don’t feel like your own natural hair.
Look and Feel
As we wrote about in this blog post about Remy Hair Extensions, Remy extensions are far superior to synthetic hair extensions. The reason for this is due to the very nature of synthetic fibers: they are generally stiff and thus move differently than real human hair and don’t blend nearly as well with your own natural hair.
Coloring and Styling
Remy human hair extensions can be treated just like your own natural hair. You can style and apply hair products to them however way you’d like just like your own natural hair. The opposite is true for synthetic hair: you cannot color or style the hair without washing the silicone off, and ruining both the beautiful shine and glossy appearance. The texture is achieved through a steam or chemical process which can again be easily washed away.
Quality and How Long Hair Extensions Last
Because synthetic hair is cheaper than real hair, it is usually of lesser quality and won’t last nearly as long as human hair even if properly taken care of. Endless Hair Extensions Malaysian hair should last 6 months-year, Brazilian hair should last over a year, Vietnamese hair should last 2-2.5 years, and Indian hair should last 2-2.5 years. To conclude, Remy human hair can be treated and styled just like your own natural hair and will look and feel the most natural while also blending in the best.
So now that we understand the difference between real hair vs synthetic hair, we can talk about the different types of hair extension installation types.
1) Clip In Hair Extensions
Clip In hair extensions is made from a strand of contoured pieces, attached at the base with either fabric or silicone. Clips attached are attached to this base and come ready to use. At this point, it’s as easy as clipping in the pieces to your own natural hair and you’re done! Each clip snaps open and closes easily. See this video to see how simple it is!
Clip In hair extensions is the least permanent style of extensions because you can quickly remove them and put them back on whenever you want. The great thing about Clip Ins as well is that unlike some other installation methods, there is no damage whatsoever to your scalp or hair because there aren’t any chemicals, heat, or pressure – they simply clip right onto your hair! You can also install Clip In extensions in a few minutes by yourself without the need for a hairdresser.
As with all Remy human hair extensions, Clip Ins are no different in that they are low maintenance and only need to be washed every 10 wears or when there’s enough product buildup that it interferes with wearing the extensions. Treat them like your own natural hair and simply wash, brush, shampoo, condition, and air dry them. See this blog post on how to wash and care for your Endless Hair Extensions. In terms of styling, you can do everything you can to them as you can to your own natural hair with the added benefit more length and volume! As mentioned previously, depending upon how you well you care for them, and the type of hair you purchased, the length of time varies from 6 months to 2.5 years. Our Malaysian hair should last 6 months-year, Brazilian hair should last over a year, Vietnamese hair should last 2-2.5 years, and Indian hair should last 2-2.5 years.
2) Tape In Hair Extensions
Tape In Hair Extensions are self-explanatory: they are extensions that are pre-tapped and then taped or glued together on either side of your own hair. Unlike Clip Ins, Tape Ins require a hairdresser to install them because you need to align and glue them with the roots and this is difficult to do without another pair of hands. Of course, when you apply heat to your roots and any adhesive product such as tape or glue, this can damage your hair. Thus unlike Clip Ins, Tape Ins are potentially more damaging. The process of installing Tape Ins usually takes an hour and if the extensions are in good condition they can be re-used.
Because you use tape and/or glue with Tape Ins, you have to be careful when using conditioners or hair products to prevent the extensions from slipping off or become loose. Often times it’s best to use shampoos or conditioners that aren’t as oily to ensure the glue continues to stick. Endless Hair Extension’s Tape In extensions are made from Remy human hair so they can be styled any way you want. Tape Ins are a more permanent style and usually last 4-8 weeks before needing to be removed and re-installed.
3) Sew In Hair Extensions/Weaves
These types of hair extensions are applied by braiding your natural hair into cornrows first, then using a needle and thread to sew the weave into the braid or cornrow. Sew In hair extensions are mostly used for people with thicker hair. The installation process is often several hours long and the tight sewing method usually puts a strain on the scalp making it feel heavy and uncomfortable.
Sew Ins/Weaves are installed by experienced hairdressers and is something that cannot be done by yourself as not only is it a lengthy process but also difficult. Sew Ins come in wig form as well which is sewn into cornrows the same way, however, the hair comes in one piece as opposed to separate wefts. This is installation method is popular because it is the most permanent and seamless as the hair is literally sewn into your own hair and cannot come off.
If you have a weave, you need to moisturize the scalp, the nape and edges of the hair at least once a week as well as use deep conditioning products. It’s also a good idea to wash the hair with a special protein product to minimize damage and weakening of the hair.
It’s recommended to remove the weave every 6-8 weeks, especially if you are trying to grow your own natural hair. You should, however, have the weave in no longer than 4 months as to not affect your natural hair’s growth.
Wigs and hairpieces come in many different forms and are made to cover your entire head. You may have heard the term “lace fronts” or “netting” and these are just two ways wigs are made. Wigs are great if you’re having issues with hair loss, balding, or to even give a completely different look to your style. Hairpieces are more like accessories and can come in the shape of a ponytail or bun. They are best used on a specific area of your head. For an example, if you’re thinning you can use it to cover that particular spot.
Wigs and hairpieces are a bit tricky to wash and if they’re not human hair, extra care should be taken. Not only that but because full hair pieces are typically attached to either plastic or other material, you should modify the way you wash and treat the hair. Naturally, the type of hair determines the lifespan of the wig and how well you take care of them.
