What Is Remy Hair?

What Is Remy Hair?

Many girls confuse Remy (also known as Remi and cuticle hair) human hair with Virgin hair. To make matters worse, these two terms are often used interchangeably when they actually have completely different meanings.

So what is Remy Hair?

Remy hair is human hair collected from a single hair donor, cut as a ponytail with the cuticles in the same direction.

Can Remy hair be Virgin or Raw? Yes, but sometimes no.

  • Remy and Virgin hair: The donor has her cut from a ponytail but has never had never dyed or bleached her hair, the human hair would be virgin and Remy.
  • Remy Non-Virgin hair: The donor has her hair cut from a ponytail, producing Remy hair but if the donor dyed or bleached her hair, it would not be virgin but still Remy.

Is Remy hair the best hair for hair extensions? Yes because:

  • Remy hair has the longest life since the human hair shaft (cuticle) is present, attached and strong. Has not been swept off the floor and have had its cuticles stripped and replaced with silicone that will wash off.
  • You can do whatever dying, bleaching, curling etc. you want on this human hair as well.
  • Take care of your extensions with simple common sense. Brush or comb gently as your hair. Wash as often as you need to. Since this human hair is Remy, there is no silicone to be washed off. Causing the hair to matt and tangle with misaligned cuticles.

Does Remy hair shed or tangle?

  • Just as real human hair will tangle if not brushed regularly, so will Remy extensions if not brushed.
  • Remy hair does help prevent matting. Simply brush and care for your extensions along with your natural human hair to ensure a smooth transition and to keep your hair looking beautiful.

What exactly is Non-Remy hair then?

 Non-Remy hair is:

  • This type of Human hair is likely collected from individual hair brushes and even hair that has fallen on the floor at hair salons or temples. Perhaps when the Remy ponytail haircut had taken place.
  • Non-Remy hair is in greater supply and is therefore much cheaper than Remy Hair and is largely manufactured.
  • The majority of human hair sold today is non-Remy hair.
  • The texture and color will be achieved via a steam or chemical process, therefore is not likely virgin and raw as well.
  • Because of the method of collection, the cuticle for each hair strand is in all different directions.
  • In order to compensate for this, the hair will go through a process sometimes referred to as an “acid bath”, to completely remove the entire cuticle. This can be equivalent to about ten relaxers in a row.
  • After the cuticle removal process, the hair is dipped in silicone to make it shine and to cover up any cuticles that were not removed in the acid bath.
  • The silicone adds weight to the hair and ups the selling price as hair is sold by weight.
  • After the cuticle removal process, the hair is dipped in silicone to make it shine and to cover up any cuticles that were not removed in the acid bath.
  • At first, the non-Remy hair will appear silky and shiny.
  • After a few shampoos, the silicone layer will start to wash off.
  • The hair will slowly become duller, brittle and will tangle and matte very easily.
  • This type of hair is not recommended for any long-term extensions, for example, sew-ins, for obvious reasons.
  • The hair will sadly but surely, slowly become duller and will tangle and matte surprisingly fast.
  • Non-Remy hair needs to be repurchased and installed more regularly then Remy extensions.
